Q. Who was Frank Belcher, Sr.? A. Frank Belcher, Sr. was one of the most powerful lawyers in California. He was, at one time, president of the California bar. He was related to J. A. Belcher, another of the CIA’s properties. I have already alluded to his wife, Ruth, and his relationship to George Reynolds. More importantly, he was the de facto partner of Joe Ball, another powerful lawyer. Belcher and Ball very often represented co-defendants in trials. Since they were not actually partners they were able to avoid charges of conflict of interest. Belcher and Ball, along with John Wayne and Fred MacMurray owned a palatial house in Acapulco, which was used as a safe house for contract agents, card carrying agents and organized crime figures, such as Stacher, Lansky, Licavoli, Roselli, Giancana and others. Belcher was also a CIA asset. He and I maintained a joint back account at the Bank of America which served as a conduit for funds from many sources, legal and illegal.

Q. Did you withdraw large sums of cash from the joint bank account with Belcher to pay other contract agents? A. Yes. In fact I withdrew such large sums of cash that I was usually accompanied by Michael Harries, another contract agent and one of the most competent shooters and shooting instructors in the world, not only to receive his pay, in cash, but to serve as my bodyguard. This has been a huge undertaking. In cross-referencing more than 70,000 pages of documents, I have made my best judgment, in good faith, on the evidence and witness statements. There was no room for a number of colorful characters who ultimately don’t convince as possible accomplices. These include the late Jerry Owen, a preacher who told police he’d arranged to sell Sirhan a horse at the back of the Ambassador on the night of the shooting, providing a novel means of escape. I have focused instead on issues that I feel still have relevance if the case were to be reopened today. I hope this book will play a part in making that happen. As the remaining witnesses begin to pass away, it’s now or never.

Author David Talbot notes that Bobby Kennedy became “America’s first JFK assassination-conspiracy theorist” after his brother’s death. In turn, the friends of Robert Kennedy have become some of the most vocal RFK assassination-conspiracy theorists. I salute Robert Blair Kaiser, Bill Turner, Jonn Christian, Philip Melanson, Dan Moldea, and William Klaber, and hope my work here builds on their legacy. What seemed, at first, an open-and-shut case, is, in truth, beguilingly complex. This book does not solve the case, but it does, I hope, provide a comprehensive and disturbing reminder of why it must be urgently reopened.

On election eve, Kennedy collapsed from exhaustion in the middle of his final campaign speech in San Diego, so today he slept late at film director John Frankenheimer’s beach home in Santa Monica. Taken with Kennedy’s idealism, Frankenheimer had jumped on board the campaign, filming speeches and campaign spots, his handheld cameras capturing the exuberant crowds and renewed hope that greeted the senator from New York. The country was in turmoil. Eight weeks before, Martin Luther King, Jr., had been assassinated, sparking waves of rioting in American cities. The Vietnam War had polarized the country, and the burgeoning antiwar movement and Black Panther Party had become lightning rods for student revolt, racial unrest, and disenchantment with society.

Two Sundays before the primary, Pierre Salinger had organized a “fun lunch” for Kennedy at Frankenheimer’s home on a rare day off. Shirley MacLaine was there with her brother, Warren Beatty. So, too, were crooner Andy Williams, composer Burt Bacharach, actress Angie Dickinson, astronaut John Glenn, and French writer Romain Gary with his wife, actress Jean Seberg, who’d earlier hosted fundraisers for the Black Panthers. Bobby had been surfing and sat shirtless and cross-legged on the floor, holding a glass of orange juice. “You know, don’t you, that somebody’s going to try to kill you?” Gary asked. Kennedy looked up slowly. “That’s the chance I have to take. You’ve just got to give yourself to the people and trust them. From then on, either luck is with you or it isn’t.

At the house in Malibu, John Frankenheimer pulled out in his Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and drove the senator to the Ambassador Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. They arrived at eight fifteen and went directly to the Kennedy suite on the fifth floor, their base for the last six weeks of the campaign.

Kennedy was summoned from his fifth-floor suite and led toward an elevator at the end of the hall, to descend to the lobby and wade onstage through his jubilant supporters. But it was late, he was tired, and he didn’t want to fight the crowds. He asked whether there was another route, and Uno Timanson, the hotel’s VP of banquet and sales, led him to a service elevator, so he could take the back way down through the kitchen. A live ABC video feed picked up his loose entourage as they stepped out of the elevator and paused in a hallway, waiting for their cue as Kennedy’s brother-in-law Steve Smith wrapped up his introductions.

Ethel adjusted the white handkerchief in Kennedy’s breast pocket, flanked by former Los Angeles Rams football tackle Rosey Grier and Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson, friends of the family helping out with crowd control on the campaign.

Former FBI agent Bill Barry, Kennedy’s unarmed bodyguard, made a final route check, then gave the senator his cue, and the party moved forward through the kitchen. Timanson and Barry led the way, clearing a path with Kennedy advance man Jack Gallivan and hotel assistant maître d’ Eddie Minasian.

The senator signed a poster for memorabilia collector Michael Wayne [son of John Wayne who Chauncey Holt implicates as part of the Kennedy assasination with Frank Belcher, both of them part f wartime PsyOps], shook hands with kitchen workers, and held up his left hand to block the lights of the television cameras. As he passed through a narrow serving pantry, he shook the outstretched hand of a tall young busboy, Juan Romero. Ten feet behind the line of waiters, Sirhan waited, balanced on a tray stacker.

He [RFK] saluted Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta for the support of the Mexican American community, loyal to Kennedy for his support during the grape pickers’ strike in Delano. He also thanked his friends in the black community, whose action programs in Watts echoed his own regeneration programs in Bedford-Stuyvesant in New York. He saluted Rafer Johnson and gentle giant Rosey Grier, “who said he’d take care of anybody who didn’t vote for me”; and Paul Schrade of the United Auto Workers “for the effort he’s made on behalf of the working man here in the state of California.”

In the northwest corner of the pantry, just inside the swinging doors, kitchen staff crowded around a TV monitor to listen to the speech. There were about twenty people in the narrow passageway, half hotel staff and half press and “outsiders.” Sirhan balanced precariously on the outside edge of a tray stacker, over by the ice machines.

Michael Anthony Morrison (November 23, 1934 – April 2, 2003), better known by his stage name Michael Wayne, was an American film producer and actor. He was the eldest son of actor John Wayne and his first wife, Josephine Saenz.

Biography

Born in Los Angeles, California, Wayne graduated from Loyola University in California in 1956 with a Business degree and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Wayne began his film career as a production assistant on the set of the John Ford film The Quiet Man in 1951. He joined his father’s film production company, Batjac Productions, for The Alamo (1960) and became line producer for McLintock! (1963) and producer on many other John Wayne vehicles including Big Jake (1971) and Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973).

Wayne, who developed the reputation of being a good businessman, served on the board of the Motion Picture & Television Fund and was The John Wayne Foundation’s president and chairman of the board. He also was founder and chairman of the board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center.

Wayne and his wife, Gretchen, had five children, son Christopher, daughters Alicia, Josephine, Maria, and Teresa. He died at the age of 68 of heart failure as the result of complications from lupus erythematosus, just two months before his mother’s death.

Sam Houston Johnson (January 31, 1914 December 11, 1978) was an American businessman. He was the younger brother of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

During World War II, Johnson worked on the staff of the War Production Board. In addition, he was employed as a member of his brother’s Senate staff and worked on Lyndon Johnson’s campaigns.

The WPB and the nation’s factories effected a great turnaround. Military aircraft production, which totaled 6,000 in 1940, jumped to 85,000 in 1943. Factories that made silk ribbons now produced parachutes, automobile factories built tanks, typewriter companies converted to rifles, undergarment manufacturers sewed mosquito netting, and a rollercoaster manufacturer converted to the production of bomber repair platforms.[8] The WPB ensured that each factory received the materials it needed to produce the most war goods in the shortest time.

The national WPB’s primary task was converting civilian industry to war production. The WPB assigned priorities and allocated scarce materials such as steel, aluminum, and rubber, prohibited nonessential industrial production such as that of nylons and refrigerators, controlled wages and prices, and mobilized the people through patriotic propaganda such as “give your scrap metal and help Oklahoma boys save our way of life”.[8] It initiated events such as scrap metal drives, which were carried out locally to great success. For example, a national scrap metal drive in October 1942 resulted in an average of almost 82 pounds (37 kg) of scrap per American.

The Heavy Press Program was motivated by experiences from World War II. Nazi Germany held the largest heavy die forging presses during the war, and translated this advantage into high performance jet fighters. Because of the shortage of aluminum, German aircraft manufacturers used forged magnesium structural components, formed to shape in closed-die hydraulic presses. After finding this, in 1944, the Federal Government asked Wyman-Gordon for assistance, and this program evolved into the Heavy Press Program. Work was started on an 18,000 ton press, built by Mesta Machinery, which was completed in 1946 at the Wyman-Gordon Grafton Plant. Post-war, the Soviet Union captured the largest German press to survive the war, with a capacity of 33,000 ton, and were suspected to have seized the designs for an even larger 55,000 ton press. The next two largest units were captured by the United States and brought across the Atlantic Ocean, but they were half the size at 16,500 ton. As Cold War fears developed, American strategists worried that this would give the Soviet Air Force a crucial advantage and designed the Heavy Press Program to help win the arms race.

An often asked question is; “did Packard replicate the British thread system when they built Rolls-Royce Merlins under license during World War II?” The answer is yes; all threads that were used on the Merlin were accurately replicated by Packard. This would include BSW (British Standard Whitworth), BSF (British Standard Fine), BSP (British Standard Pipe) and BA (British Association). Having said that, however, Packard Merlins> used U.S. built Bendix injection carburetors; PD-16 for single stage engines and PD-18 for two stage engines, both of which used U.S. Unified threads. British built Merlins employed S.U. carburetors using Whitworth threads. The job facing Packard when they undertook manufacture of the Merlin was daunting to say the least. It’s bad enough having to build a complex product like the Merlin but exacerbating the situation was the fact no tool maker in the U.S. made Whitworth taps or dies. Therefore, Packard were forced into making their own. Although this created a significant hurdle to overcome, the effort was well worth it, Packard and Rolls-Royce components were interchangeable.

In 1903, at the behest of a group of investors, the Packard Automotive Company moved its headquarters from Warren, Ohio to Detroit. Then-president of the company, Henry Joy, looking for a fresh take on factory buildings, enlisted local architect Albert Kahn to design the company’s complex. The first nine buildings on the site were built between 1903-1905. These followed the typical mill-style factory buildings of the time, with cramped rooms, wooden columns, floors, and ceilings, and very little natural light. Due to the large amount of wood used in construction, these buildings were fire hazards. By the tenth building, Packard #10, Kahn wanted to improve the design, by providing open spaces and large windows for lighting and ventilation, making workers comfortable and more productive. To create this new style, he sought help from his brother, Julius Kahn, a well-known engineer who was experimenting with new ways to reinforce concrete.

In 1904, Julius Kahn designed a trussed concrete steel re-bar reinforcement system, known as The Kahn Bar. This system features wings, bent at a 45 degree angle, along the length of steel re-bar which strengthened the concrete to prevent shearing at weak points. This design allowed for much larger loads to be carried on concrete, larger spans between support columns, and increased use of fire-safe materials. Utilizing his brother’s Kahn Bar and the technical advantages it gave, Albert Kahn designed Packard #10 to be built using only reinforced concrete, allowing for the large open spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows that he wanted to provide for workers, along with much safer working conditions. The design for Packard #10 changed the way industrial buildings were designed and built. It was the first industrial building to use reinforced concrete for floors, ceilings, and columns. Prouthy: A letter from one of the most beautiful women in the world lies buried in a stack of mail on President Ford’s desk. Written in Paris on July 24, 1975, by Dewi Sukarno, the former First Lady of Indonesia and widow of Dr. Achmed Sukarno, the charismatic Father of Indonesia, the letter is an appeal to President Ford for a complete explanation of the CIA-led and supported rebellions that took place in Indonesia in 1958 and 1965.

It is not well known in the United States that the 1958 rebellion led to a major Indonesian civil war. The CIA-inspired uprising in Indonesia, unlike the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, was a full-scale military operation. The Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 was made by a thin brigade of about 1,500 Cuban exiles trained by the CIA in Guatemala. But the 1958 Indonesian action involved no less than 42,000 CIA-armed rebels supported by a fleet of bombers and vast numbers of four-engine transport aircraft as well as submarine assistance from the U.S. Navy.

It also involved a major training and logistical supporting effort on the part of the Philippines, Okinawa, Taiwan, and Singapore. But despite this massive armed force, the 1958 rebellion, like the Bay of Pigs invasion, was a total failure. Sukarno’s army drove the rebels on Sumatra and Celebes into the sea.

There are some who might call the 1965 uprising a success. At least the rebels were not driven into the sea. However, for the United States it was a fantastically costly endeavor. The rebellion ended in the most massive and ruthless bloodbath since World War II. While the headlines in the United States dealt with the slaughter in Vietnam, the press of the rest of the world heaped blame on the United States for the barbaric massacre in Indonesia. The victorious new government of General Suharto proceeded to assassinate nearly one million people. This terrible slaughter and the ensuing imprisonment of tens of thousands of Indonesians stirred Dewi Sukarno to seek President Ford’s assistance in gaining the release of her countrymen from prison.

Dewi Sukarno has received no answer. But even without a reply she knows. The silence from Washington speaks for itself. A denial, if true, would have come without hesitation. The Indonesians know. The Latins had a phrase for it, “Is fecit cui prodest” — the perpetrator of a crime is he who profits by it. Today, major U.S. enterprises are plundering the raw material wealth of Indonesia — rubber, tin, and oil — in a manner that is more vile than what is happening in Chile. And there is no one to stop them.

Achmed Sukarno was one of those rare men who rose during the hours of crisis to unite one hundred million people and lead them out of the ashes of World War II. Sukarno came to liberate his country from the Japanese, the Dutch, the Portuguese, and from all others who were ready to enslave his country once again. The conduit for all CIA operations in California and Arizona was Phillip Twombly, former executive vice president of Coca Cola, the eyes and ears of the CIA in the Caribbean, who owned the University Bank of Fullerton, California.

Joseph Stacher (c. 1902 – 1977) (alias Doc Stacher, Joseph Rosen, Doc Harris el al) was a Jewish syndicate leader who helped bring together the Jewish and Italian Mafia into a national organized crime syndicate.

Early life

Joseph Stacher was born Gdale Oistaczer (commonly pronounced Gedalia) in Letychiv, Ukraine around 1902. He emigrated with his family to the United States in 1912. As a teenager living in Newark, New Jersey, he became friends with Meyer Lansky and Abner Zwillman. He attained United States citizenship in May 1930, but his naturalization was later revoked.

Career

By the 1920s Stacher was running much of Zwillman’s gambling operations. In 1931, Stacher helped Meyer Lansky organize a conference of Jewish organized crime leaders at the Franconia Hotel, which later would see the alleged merging of the Jewish and Italian Mafia into a national crime syndicate. Running West Coast and Caribbean gambling operations for Lansky during the 1930s, as well as becoming a silent partner of movie studio Columbia Pictures in the late 1930s, Stacher would later supervise gambling in Las Vegas, Nevada, particularly the Sands and Fremont Casinos.

Stacher continued running Mafia gambling operations until 1964, when Federal authorities arrested him for tax evasion. While the US government was in favor of deporting him to his native Ukraine, federal law prohibited deporting anyone to a communist-controlled country. However, because of the “Law of Return“, Stacher was allowed citizenship in Israel and successfully immigrated there in 1965.

While living in Israel he served as the primary source of Israeli journalists Dennis Eisenberg, Uri Dan, and Eli Landau for a biography of Meyer Lansky. Stacher continued living in Israel until his death.

Death

Stacher died, according to some reports in a Munich, West Germany, hotel room on February 28, 1977. His death was reported as a heart attack and his body shipped back to Israel. He was buried secretly and the nameplate of his grave was altered to hide his burial site. Only eight men were at the funeral, so the family had to ask a reporter and photographer to join the ceremony in order to attain a minyan.

He has teamed up with Movie Star William Holden and the Swiss millionaire-industrialist, Carl Hirschman, in taking over a ritzy African hotel and converting it into a plus safari club for millionaires and people with lesser but adequate means. The three have organized the Mount Kenya Safari Club six miles outside Nanyuki in Kenya, British East Africa. They bought the hotel in February and are about to embark on their first season.

Kenya Safari Club, including a hotel, announced he intends to spend more of his time the next few years in Palm Springs to direct the El Mirador, with occasional flying trips to Africa. Much of Holt’s post-Bay of Pigs work for the CIA was in California where his job included establishing proprietary interests for the company. He took strong recommendations from his close associates Meyer Lansky and Peter Licavoli in order to be able to begin associating with powerful Californians.

These included Frank Belcher, Joseph A. Ball who was later a senior counsel for the Warren Commission, as well as Goodwin Knight, Alfred Gitelson, and other influential partners in KG & Co.

“I operated five different proprietary interests including a documentation mill, two fixed based operations for aircraft, a weapons modification plant, and a business management firm which disbursed contingency funds to contract agents and carried out money laundering operations. Frank Belcher and I had a joint bank account at the Bank of America in Burbank, California, that was used to launder contingency funds, pay contract agents, and receive funds from those clients of the CIA fronts that availed themselves of our services. Belcher was a relative of J.A. Belcher of Belcher Oil Company, another firm closely connected to the CIA.

He was married to Ruth Reynolds, who was related to George Reynolds of Morgan City, Louisiana, another asset, and Bob Reynolds, who was chief of station of JM/ Wave, the huge CIA complex located on the campus of the University of Miami. “Belcher and Ball were partners, along with actors John Wayne and Fred MacMurray, in a luxurious house in Acapulco, next to Las Brisas. It was used almost like a time share for the men and their friends. Among the ‘friends’ were CIA contract agents and organized crime figures such as Lansky, Licavoli, and Stacher, who went there for meetings. I never did learn if Wayne and MacMurray were aware of the meetings taking place. It was an investment that paid off for all concerned, and they may not have been aware of anything more than the appreciation in the property’s value prior to the partners’ selling it.”

James P. Donegan (my father), then 86, of Lincoln, Calif., originally from Dorchester, Mass., died Oct. 13, from injuries following an accident. Jim leaves his wife, Sue Ann of Lincoln; two sons from his first marriage, Thomas of Provincetown, Mass., and Edward of Arlington, Va. He also leaves a sister, Mary “Betty” Connolly of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Robert of Marshfield, Mass. Following the war, Jim joined TWA and spent the next 35 years as a pilot captain. His career took him over many of their domestic and international routes. He told me (his son) as we walked through the National Aerospace Museums (there are actually two of them sine most cities don’t keep things the size of the Space Shuttle downtown) the ME 262 was no match for the P-51 D. He had flown in those battles in the 8th Air Force of the US Army Air Corp. The ME was an incredible looking plane and had jet engines but the P-51 could still defeat it. In retrospect that is not so hard to believe. Piston engines can reach about 200 miles per hour, Warp 2 in Star Treck enterprise versions history. Turboprops those that in addition to the “gas charges” placed in the combustion chambers to push the cylinder head as though a canon ball created high PSI air charges added in too. This allowed enough oxygen for combustion at the high altitude bombers flew at those bombers hoping to avoid ground anti-aircraft fire. Each plan though like the ME 262 jet engine fighter and the P-51D were approaching the speed of sound and air-frames of conventional designs could not break through the hard as cement walls of air forming in front of these high speed planes. He explained to me over the course of his lie Supersonic flight and getting through the barrier as part of aviation history. He may also have have been talking about the P-40 as well as I remember back and read more about those planes.

The P-51 with its Merlin engine (Birds of Prey see the statue in M’s office, James Bond Casino Royale) were Supermarine Dive planes that could fly to and dive down from high altitude like Merlins. The Packard Motor company could and did build V-12 engine blocks and Packard Motor company took the two stage supercharger Rolls Royce was using for its Spitfire Merline engine and built for the P-51 and possibly even for Spitfires to add in more production planes. The Battle to Wichita Kansas that built the B-29 was a battle of industrial capacity to churn out state of the art capable bombers Inglewood California Los Angeles County and Packard Motors Los Angles County Paul Schrade was a union rep for turned out these war machines.

Jeanette Helen Morrison (July 6, 1927 – October 3, 2004), known professionally as Janet Leigh was born on July 6, 1927, in Merced, California, the only child of Helen Lita (née Westergaard) and Frederick Robert Morrison. Her maternal grandparents were immigrants from Denmark, and her father had Scots-Irish and German ancestry. Shortly after Leigh’s birth, the family relocated to Stockton, where she spent her early life. She was brought up in poverty, as her father struggled to support the family with his factory employment, and he took various additional jobs after the Great Depression.

Leigh was raised Presbyterian and sang in the local church choir throughout her childhood. In 1941, when her paternal grandfather became terminally ill, the family relocated to Merced, where they moved into her grandparents’ home. She attended Weber Grammar School in Stockton, and later Stockton High School. Leigh excelled in academics and graduated from high school at age sixteen.

In February 1946, actress Norma Shearer was vacationing at Sugar Bowl, a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains where Leigh’s parents were working at the time. In the resort lobby, Shearer noticed a photograph of Leigh taken by her father over the Christmas holiday, which he had printed and placed in a photo album available for guests to browse.

Leigh appeared in a number of films in 1949, including the thriller, Act of Violence (1949), with Van Heflin and Robert Ryan, directed by Fred Zinnemann. Though a financial failure, it was well received by critics. She also had a significant hit with MGM’s version of Little Women, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, in which she portrayed Meg March, alongside June Allyson and Elizabeth Taylor. The same year, RKO borrowed Leigh to appear in the musical Two Tickets to Broadway (1951), which was a box-office success. She was one of many stars in the anthology film It’s a Big Country: An American Anthology (1952) and appeared in a romantic comedy with Peter Lawford, Just This Once (1952).

In addition to her work as an actress, Leigh also wrote four books between 1984 and 2002, two of which were novels. The North American P-51 Mustang[c] first entered squadron service in Europe with the British in early 1942; having much success with the RAF, although it found the Allison V-1710-engined aircraft’s performance inadequate at higher altitudes. In mid-42 Rolls-Royce engineers rapidly realized that equipping the Mustang with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine with its two speed, two stage supercharger would substantially improve performance. Also, by using a four-bladed propeller, rather than the three-bladed one used on the P-51A, the performance was greatly improved[d].

The USAAF now finally had an aircraft that could compete on equal terms with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and the later models of the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The USAAF was finally fully sold on the Mustang, and a letter contract for 2,200 P-51Bs was issued. The engine was to be the Packard V-1650-3, based on the Rolls-Royce Merlin Mk68.

In late 1943, the P-51B Mustang was introduced to the European Theater by the USAAF. It could fly as far on its internal fuel tanks as the P-47 could with drop tanks. However, the P-51B was introduced as a tactical fighter, so the first deliveries of the P-51B in November 1943 were assigned to three groups in the tactical Ninth Air Force at the expense of VIII Bomber Command, whose need for a long range escort fighter was critical. The first escort mission for the bombers was not flown until 5 December.

As the new commander of the Eighth Air Force since January 1944, Major General Jimmy Doolittle’s major influence on the European air war occurred early that year when he made a critical change to the policy requiring escorting fighters to remain with the bombers at all times. With Doolittle’s permission, American fighter pilots on bomber defense missions would primarily be flying far ahead of the bombers’ combat box formations in air supremacy mode, literally “clearing the skies” of any Luftwaffe fighter opposition heading towards the target. This strategy fatally disabled the twin-engined Zerstörergeschwader heavy fighter wings and their replacement, single-engined Sturmgruppen of heavily armed Fw 190As, clearing each force of bomber destroyers in their turn from Germany’s skies throughout most of 1944. As part of this game-changing strategy, especially after the bombers had hit their targets, the USAAF’s fighters were then free to strafe German airfields and transport while returning to base, contributing significantly to the achievement of air superiority by Allied air forces over Europe.

The effect of the Mustangs, fully operating as an air supremacy fighter force, on the Luftwaffe defenders was arguably swift and decisive. The result was that the Luftwaffe was notable by its absence over the skies of Europe after D-Day and the Allies were starting to achieve air superiority over the continent. Although the Luftwaffe could, and did, mount effective attacks on the ever-larger formations of Allied heavy bombers, the sheer numbers of B-17s and B-24s attacking enemy targets was overwhelming the German fighter force, which simply could not sustain the losses the Eighth Air Force bombers and fighters were inflicting on it. In order to quickly assemble these formations, specially outfitted assembly ships were created from older bombers.

By mid-1944, Eighth Air Force had reached a total strength of more than 200,000 people (it is estimated that more than 350,000 Americans served in Eighth Air Force during the war in Europe). At peak strength, Eighth Air Force had forty heavy bomber groups, fifteen fighter groups, and four specialized support groups. It could, and often did, dispatch more than 2,000 four-engine bombers and more than 1,000 fighters on a single mission to multiple targets.

By 1945, all but one of the Eighth Air Force fighter groups were equipped with the P-51D.

In 1922, two former Tufts University students, Lawrence K. Marshall and Vannevar Bush, along with Harvard physicist Charles G. Smith, founded the American Appliance Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Initially interested in refrigeration technology, they soon shifted their attention to electronics and had their breakthrough with a helium rectifier. The tube that made this all possible was named Raytheon, meaning “god of life” in Greek, and this company was renamed the Raytheon Manufacturing Company in 1925 after the success of this first product. As the company grew they diversified and within a decade were involved in the manufacture of electron tubes and switches, transformers, power equipment, electronic automobile parts, and vacuum tubes.

Diversification in products and in investments with other companies kept Raytheon successful during the 1930s. As the 1940s dawned President Franklin Delano Roosevelt authorized the development of radar technologies through the joint efforts of American and British scientists. MIT’s Radiation Laboratory pioneered innovation of radar technology and chose Raytheon to develop the top secret cavity magnetron, the vacuum tube that made microwave radar a possibility. In 1941, the potential of radar was realized as Raytheon was awarded the contract for 100 radar systems for Allied naval ships. By the end of the war, Raytheon magnetrons accounted for 80 percent of the radar magnetrons produced during the war.

While the MIT Rad Lab continued work on theoretical applications of microwave technology with Raytheon’s products, at Raytheon headquarters, as the story has it, an innovation developed by accident revolutionized life across the entire globe. Raytheon scientist, Percy Spencer, working on microwaves noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket melted while he was in the laboratory. Intrigued, he brought in popcorn kernels and was astounded to watch them pop. Whether this tale indeed took place, or is just an nice anecdote, it is certain that Spencer and others set to work on the application of microwave technology for cooking and heating food. In 1947, Raytheon introduced the Radarange microwave for commercial use-a technology which hinted at a change to the notion of cooking forever.

George Gordon Battle Liddy (November 30, 1930 – March 30, 2021) was an American lawyer, criminal and FBI agent who was convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping for his role in the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration.

Working alongside E. Howard Hunt, Liddy organized and directed the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate building in May and June 1972. After five of Liddy’s operatives were arrested inside the DNC offices on June 17, 1972, subsequent investigations of the Watergate scandal led to Nixon’s resignation in 1974. Liddy was convicted of burglary, conspiracy, and refusing to testify to the Senate committee investigating Watergate. He served nearly 52 months in federal prisons.

At age 29, Liddy became the youngest[11] bureau supervisor at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.. Under the mentorship of deputy director Cartha DeLoach, Liddy secured a position on director J. Edgar Hoover’s personal staff, even acting as Hoover’s ghostwriter. Despite his achievements, Liddy was also known for his reckless behavior among his fellow agents, highlighted by two particular incidents.[14]

The first incident took place in Kansas City, Missouri, during a covert operation. He was arrested but was subsequently released after contacting Clarence M. Kelley, former FBI agent and the then-chief of the Kansas City Police. The second incident involved an FBI background check that Liddy conducted on his future wife before they got married in 1957. Liddy later claimed this action was a routine precautionary measure.

Born Dec. 17, 1924, Schrade was raised in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and briefly attended Yale before heading west for a job at North American Aviation in Los Angeles and then rising up the ranks of the United Automobile Workers Union. He struck up a friendship with Kennedy when the future senator’s brother was on his way to becoming president.

Paul Schrade soaked up the excitement as the crowd roared and Robert Kennedy smiled and leaned into the microphone: “So my thanks to all of you, and on to Chicago and let’s win there.”

Kennedy had just won the 1968 Democratic presidential primary in California, and there was a palpable sense inside the old Ambassador Hotel that the young New York senator had seized enough momentum to carry his suddenly super-charged campaign through to the convention in Chicago.

And then everything went to hell.

An auto workers union leader who had introduced Kennedy to powerful labor figures such as Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, Schrade was walking a pace or two behind Kennedy when the first shot was fired.

“I got hit by the first shot,” Schrade told The Times. “I was right behind Bobby. It was meant for him and got me. I thought I had been electrocuted. I was shaking violently on the floor and saw flashes.”

When he looked up, Schrade saw Kennedy slumped on the ground, a young busboy cradling the dying senator’s head in his hands. By the following day, Kennedy was dead and a young Jordanian immigrant named Sirhan Sirhan was behind bars, accused of killing the senator.

Kennedy’s death hung over the nation for decades, altering the course of American politics and forming a dismal closing chapter to a turbulent decade. To some, it marked a farewell to a generation’s innocence.

Schrade slid into depression, lost reelection to his union leadership post and returned to the auto assembly line. He also became convinced that there was more than one gunman in the hotel ballroom that June night and that Sirhan – who has repeatedly been denied parole over the last half century – did not fire the shot that killed Kennedy.

An authority on the Kennedy assassination who testified on Sirhan’s behalf at parole hearings, Schrade died early Wednesday after a brief illness at his home in Los Angeles, according to his brother-in-law, Martin Weil. Schrade was 97.

While he believed police and prosecutors had bungled the assassination probe and had failed to earnestly look for a second shooter, he spent the bulk of his energy chasing the causes Kennedy had embraced – ending the war in Vietnam, fighting for the marginalized, dampening the racism that still flared in plain view.

Schrade also helped lead the effort to transform the Ambassador Hotel into a school complex, upending Donald Trump’s plan to build what the future president pledged would be the tallest building in the country. The library at Robert F. Kennedy Communities Schools is now named in Schrade’s honor.

Many of America’s darkest moments, the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. among them, spawned mysteries and conspiracy theories. And so it was with the death of Robert Kennedy. How could it be, skeptics asked, that Kennedy was shot from behind while Sirhan was standing in front of him? Sirhan’s revolver held eight bullets, but some insisted more shots had been fired and that ballistics evidence pointed to a second gun.

Los Angeles police grudgingly reinvestigated the shooting in the 1970s and again concluded that Sirhan was the lone gunman.

For his own part, Sirhan was little help. He testified that he had been at a firing range earlier that day, had come to the Ambassador to attend a party and had briefly left the hotel and then returned after deciding he was too drunk to drive. The rest of the night was enveloped in fog, he said.

Sirhan offered contrition at his parole hearings, but always stopped short of taking full blame.

“Sen. Kennedy was the hope of the world and I injured, and I harmed all of them and it pains me to experience that, the knowledge for such a horrible deed, if I did in fact do that,” he testified after being recommended for parole in 2021.

To Schrade, none of it added up. The police investigation felt rushed and sloppy, and key pieces of evidence had been ignored, he said. The closer he looked, the more convinced he was that Sirhan did not shoot Kennedy.

“Yes, he did shoot me. Yes, he shot four other people and aimed at Kennedy,” Schrade told the Washington Post. “The important thing is he did not shoot Robert Kennedy. Why didn’t they go after the second gunman? They knew about him right away. They didn’t want to know who it was. They wanted a quickie.”

In 2016, Schrade testified on Sirhan’s behalf but the parole board, as it had before and would again, denied him parole.

“Sirhan, I’m so sorry this is happening to you,” Schrade shouted as Sirhan was led away in handcuffs.

When Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected parole for Sirhan in January 2022, marking the 16th time he’d been denied freedom, Schrade was saddened, but hardly surprised.

“He did not shoot Robert Kennedy and should have been released long ago,” he said.

Despite his best efforts to avoid the assignment, Charlie and his now gung-ho friend, Commander “Bus” Cummings, find themselves and a makeshift two-man film crew aboard a ship with the combat engineers, who will be the first sailors ashore on D-Day. When they land, Charlie tries to retreat, but Admiral Cummings shoots him in the leg with his M1911 pistol; shortly after, a German artillery shell lands near the limping-running Charlie, making him the first American casualty on Omaha Beach. Europe- All of the world is nearly lost to Nazi Germany including France just across the channel from England.

“Never was so much owed by so many to so few” was a wartime speech delivered to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom by British prime minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940. The name stems from the specific line in the speech, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force and other Allied aircrew who were fighting in the Battle of Britain, the pivotal air battle with the German Luftwaffe.

The speech came amidst German plans for an invasion. At the end of June 1940, the Luftwaffe had a large numerical superiority over the Royal Air Force, with around 2,550 planes compared to the only 750 planes of the RAF. Pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain have been known as “the Few” ever since, at times being specifically commemorated for Battle of Britain Day, on 15 September. The speech has become one of Churchill’s most famous, along with “we shall fight on the beaches”, “their finest hour”, and “blood, toil, tears, and sweat”.

We had seen the Messerschmidt 109 in a museum and he talked about how good looking the plane was visually but the P-51 was superior and its match and then some in battle.

Bf-109 – The Messerschmidt Bf-109 fighters used in the movie were actually Spanish-built Buchons, built under license by the Spanish and being very similar to the Me-109 (Bf-109). The main difference was that a Merlin engine was used instead of the Daimler-Benz engine used in the German WWII fighters. In order for the aircraft to better represent a 1940 Bf-109E fake cannon barrels were added to the wings and fake machine guns were added to the upper engine cowling. Tailplane struts were also added, and the rounded wingtips were removed. The movie production company was fortunate in that as they started their search for available German fighters the Spanish air force had just retired their entire fleet of Buchons. A large pile of scrapped Buchons was purchased at auction, and 19 aircraft were reconstructed from the salvage to be used in the movie.
